The tortoise is a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture. Chinese people believe that tortoises can live more than one thousand years. There is an intimate connection between tortoises and Chinese culture. There are volumes of masterpieces related to tortoises throughout the history. Tortoises were used commonly as a decoration on tombstones in ancient times, also, there were usually some manuscripts by ancient emperors on tortoises' back . Nevertheless, the tortoise can also be regarded as a derogatory term. In chinese culture, the turtle is the symble of the long life. Chinese think the turtle have thousand years life. The turtle have intimate connection with the chinese culture. There are lots of composation about the turtle in the past dynasties. There is always some decoration with the turtle on the grave stones, and there is often some manuscripts of the emperor on the back of the turtle. However, the turtle also have some bad meaning. In the general life, the word "GUI(the pronounciation of the turtle in chinese)" have the meaning of abuse and insult. While in the west culture, the "turtle" is just a slowly animal, without any other derivation.
