In other word, they just wanted to achieve some kind of liberation meanings and to obtain their freedom and I think what happens in the entire play was that under the confining environment, the three people'e efforts in seeking for liberation were in vain and they had eventually failed.

The three people [confined/locked up] in the
room have no idea about who sent them into the “room”. It would be the result
of their own choice rather than that they are sent here by “others”.
In the backroom of the hell, I noticed that it
was mentioned repeatedly in the play that there was no mirror in the backroom. As
soon as entering the room, 加尔散noticed that “there is no mirror here”;
afterwards as伊内丝 called him the “butcher”, he said again: “I
would give anything out if only could I have a look at myself in the mirror.” 艾丝黛尔was more agog for a mirror.
Why a mirror is so important here? 艾丝黛尔said: “If I can't look at myself in the mirror, I would doubt whether I exist
in real. It wouldn’t help even by touching myself.” Without a mirror, people could
only use other people as the mirror to look for proof of self-being and to get
awareness of oneself in other people’s look. More importantly, the backroom itself
does not belong to the world. Despite that the three who had just died could see
some of the things happened in the world, they could take no action to change
anything at all.
The three major characters in the play wereall guilty.
What the three, who were sent to hell, were
doing is for the common goal of trying to avoid torments and pains in the hell.
In other words, they were trying to get some sort of disentanglement and to get
freedom. In my view, what the play tried to display is the futile efforts and
ultimate failure of the three in seeking for disentanglement under theconfining environment.

The three people,who are incarcerated in the room,don't clear how they have been sent to this "room". Maybe it is better to say that present situation is their choice rather than "some one" make them to be.
In the secret chamber of hell--as I repeatly mentioned, there is no mirror. As soon as Garza enter into this room, he has noticed that; When Inez calls him"executioner" afterwards,he said again:" If you are willing to look into the mirror, I would give you anything"; Isdell is more eager to find a mirror. Why "mirror" is of so much importance here? Isdell has said,"When I don't look into the mirror, it is useless for me to touch myself. I will doubt about my existence." Without a mirror, people can only take others as one and grab any evidence to testify their self-existence. Through others' sight one knows himself. Besides, this secret chamber is actually not belong to man's world. Three recently dead can no longer take action to change anything even if they can partly see what happens in man's world.
These three main charactors are all siners.
They have only one common aim after they have been sent down to hell--spare no effort to escape the torture and pain of hell.In other words, to extricate themself and gain liberation to some extent. In my opinion, the whole drama is aim to display how these three people, in this incarcecated environment,fail and in vain to pursue their extrication.
