Mining engineers plan and manage operations to exploit minerals from underground or open-pit mines, safely and efficiently. They design and direct mining operations and infrastructure including:

What the course involves
In your first year you will completed the Engineering Foundation Year (EFY). The EFY builds a solid base of the fundamental concepts common to all areas of engineering. The EFY was developed in partnership with industry to create a curriculum that is reflective of engineering practice. After completing this common year you can select to major in mining engineering.
In this course, you will study engineering as well as basic science subjects. As you progress, increasing emphasis will be placed on mining science and technology, which involves the study of soil and rock mechanics, explosive and rock breakage, materials transport, mining methods, mine planning, project evaluation and the environment.
The first year of the four-year course is taught only at Bentley as an engineering foundation, while the second year of study is available at Bentley and Kalgoorlie.

The last two years are taught only in the mining centre of Kalgoorlie at Curtin's Western Australian School of Mines (WASM).
You will need to complete at least 12 weeks of engineering work experience during the summer breaks, in order to graduate from mining engineering.
