Passage 2
As we know, sleep is necessary to everyone. If we don’t sleep well enough, we’ll feel tired.
Each night we have two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives our body the rest and prepares us for active sleep, in which dreaming appears. In passive sleep, the body is at rest. The heart slows down. We move very little. And the brain becomes inactive. If a person continues to sleep, the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in the brain increases, the body becomes very, very still, and the brain goes from being inactive to being active. And as the brain becomes more active, the eyes begin to move rapidly. This is sign of another change—the change is that a person is dreaming.
Many people say that they don’t dream, or that they seldom dream. That’s not true. Scientists have found that everyone dreams for about one and a half hours a day, and that everyone dreams from three to seven times a night, though in ordinary life a person may remember none or only one of these dreams. In fact, everyone needs passive sleep in order to rest his body, everyone needs active sleep in order to rest his mind, and everyone needs to dream in order to keep healthy.
46. When dreaming appears, we are in ___.
