【stem】n.  (花草的)茎, (树木的)干

（1）The stem of the mushroom is broken.

这只蘑菇的梗折断了。

你必须止住伤口流血。

【base】n.  基础, 底座

（1）The lamp stands on a circular base.

这盏台灯是装在圆形底座上的。 

（2）The country maintains military bases on foreign soil.

root（词根）stem（词干）base（词基）它们是同一个概念。比如：移动movement.moving moved .move就是词根.action行动 react反映 act就是词根.一个词根可加前缀 后缀等.

一个词比如naturalised，去掉所有词缀之后就是root( nature)，去掉屈折词缀(比如-ed, -s, -ing)之后就是stem( naturalise)，去掉最外层那个词缀(不管是屈折还是派生)之后就是base(在naturalised 里就是naturalise，如果在naturalise里就是natural)

A base is derivationally analyzable (e.g. undesire in undesirable) while a root cannot be further analyzed, e.g. desire in undesirable;

Undesirable in undesirables is either a stem or a base;
Desirable in undesirable is only a base.
