Passage 1
Almost everyone loves to go to a fine restaurant for a good meal, but when Dave Patterson drives on the road he has his meals at a coffee shop or at special restaurants called “truck shops”(公路快餐馆). He hopes to buy his own truck, so he cannot spend all his money on food.
Young people also have to save their money. After a film, a basketball game or a dance, boys and girls like to stop for something to eat. Usually they will go to a fast food restaurant. They do not have to wait long to get the food. Sometimes they stay in their cars. They give their orders into a microphone near the car window, and someone give their food and takes their money.
Popular fast foods are hamburgers, hot dogs, milk shakes(奶昔) and coca-cola. It is not usually necessary to drive far to find these foods. A person’s favorite restaurant may be at five or more places in the same city. Because there are hundreds of the same places across the country, they are called “chains”.
Some fast food chains sell American, Chinese, German, or Mexican foods.
People who do not want to eat in their cars take the food with them. They can carry home a chicken dinner and put it on the dinner table or take it to the park for a family picnic.
For many high school and college students fast food chains are not just a place to eat. Since these restaurants need many young people to prepare and sell food, they are also good place for them to work.
