In 1981, Ramshaw and Mallinson invented a novel gas–liquid contactor, termed rotating packed bed (RPB), rotating a dounghnut-shaped packing element to generate a centrifugal acceleration as high as several hundred g values. This novel technology was named “Higee” (an acronym for high gravity).Under a high gravity field,the liquid within the RPB would be uniformly distributed and interact rigorously with the gas stream consequently. Due to the lower tendency of flooding, the RPB could permit huge gas and/or liquid flow rate with a smaller volume in comparison with the conventional packed bed. Furthermore, owing to the fact that the centrifugal acceleration could produce thinner liquid film and/or tiny droplet with the contribution of packings, the RPB could enhance the gas–liquid mass transfer by 1–2 orders of magnitude. As a result, the size of the RPB would be significantly reduced and, thus, the capital and operating costs would be reduced simul-taneously. The RPB has a
wide applicability in a variety of gas–liquid contacting processes such as distillation,absorption, stripping, deaeration, reactive precipitation, and ozone oxidation.

absorption, investigating the mass-transfer performance of the RPB equipped

the aim of this work is to examine the mass-transfer performance of the RPB
equipped with blade packings under various operating conditions using VOCs
absorption. The tested VOCs absorption process involves the absorption of
ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate from air stream by water. Results in this
work provide further insight into the feasibility of applying the RPB equippedwith blade packings to the VOCs absorption processes. 展开
