The Mongols took over Dunhuang in 1227 as Genghis Khan stormed in from the Gobi. Muslim forces cleared out the region in the 16th century. The Chinese resettled Dunhuang once again in 1760. In 1900, a Daoist monk by the name of Wang Yuan Lu, seeking refuge from famines in Hubei Province, arrived in Dunhuang. While clearing out a cave, he discovered a door leading to a dark inner chamber filled with a treasure trove of thousands of manuscripts and paintings. The cave had been bricked up to stop the contents from falling into the hands of invaders. The dry desert air had helped to preserve much of the materials inside the cave.
