An astronaut is sent into space on a mission to discover how long a
man can survive living isolated and on the moon. The man is a former
alcoholic but only drank as a young child, and had quit cold turkey by
the age of 16 due to health complications. He is inflicted with a
disease that lowers his tolerance to alcohol drastically. The man can
become drunk from drinking only 2oz of whiskey. The man passes all
tests and is recognized as a first round choice to go into space due
to his ability to survive all simulations without negative effects.
This strength is derived from his overcoming of alcoholism as a child
something most adults struggle to overcome for the rest of their
lives.
The man begins to relapse a few days before the mission is set to
begin. He sneaks on to the ship and is caught by a guard who lets him
wander because of the level of respect the guard has for the main
character. The main character decides to sneak a case of whiskey on to
the ship as he knows he may be on the moon for many years. He
struggles to carry the whiskey up the long ramp to the door of the
fuselage of the shuttle. The day of the mission the man is discovered
with alcohol in his system and dismisses it as having had a few drinks
with his family to celebrate the mission which he is about to undergo.
The man in actuality drank alone and has a family which is ashamed of
him and his drinking ways as a child and his failed marriage.
