Tom:Have you ever been to England?
Mary:Yeah, I have been in England for the past five years.
Tom:So, Mary, you have been in England for quite a long time now?
Mary:Hmm.
Tom:What differences do you notice between England and the United States?
Mary:Obviously, the biggest difference is the people. The average Englishmen are...cold and not very open.
Tom:Oh?
Mary:In the United States, it is very different. We start Conversations with peoplein the street, in the subway; we are a lot more outgoing than Englishmen. Youknow, when I first went to England. I couldn’t understand why I was getting solittle reaction from people, but now I see that they thought I was tooenergetic and too friendly too soon.
Tom:Tell me, do the Englishmen improve as you get to know them?
Mary:Oh yes.
Tom:Oh good.
Mary:Once you have made a friend, it’s a friend for life, but it takes a very long time.I’ll tell you something very important. An Englishman in America is respected.Everyone wants to talk to him. We’re inquisitive; we love his accent and hiscountry. But Americans in England are thought to be a little inferior because oftheir loud behavior and their language. One thing I’ve learned is that Englishpeople like a certain body distance. When (was talking to someone, be wouldmove away and I thought “Do I smell? Am I boring him?” The reason was, you see,Americans stand closer when they’re talking. Again, English people like acertain body distance.

Tom:Are you going to be in the Christmas program this year?
Mary:Yes, I’m supposed to be one of the shepherds. My sister Jane is going to beMary and her doll is going to be the Baby Jesus. Aren’t you going to be one ofthe Three Wise Men?
Tom:Yes, I am. I was Joseph last year.
Mary:I like being in the Christmas program. I like the Christmas songs and I likethe way I feel at Christmas time.
Tom:I like the presents we get at Christmas time, but it is nice to remember thatwe have Christmas to celebrate the day Jesus was born.
