Expressing gratitude

Think of the situations below. Your mother is busy in the kitchen. She suddenly asks you to fetch a bowl for her. You do so. What’ll your mother’弊首s response be? Probably she’ll just continue doing the cooking. After a while, the dinner is ready. Your mother hands you your bowl of rice. What’s your response? Probably just begin to eat.

That’s what I want to say. In Chinese families, we rarely say “Thank you” to other family members for receiving help or service. Neither will we say so between good friends. It’乎庆s such an unpopular response that if you say it, the counterpart will think you are treating him as a stranger, otherwise you are lacking of intimacy.

But in the West, "thank you"岁卜握 is one of the most frequently used sentences. Teachers will thank a student for answering a question; husbands will thank his wife for making a coffee.

However, as an interesting phenomenon, it’s a custom to say "thank you" in Japan. No matter in family or among friends, Japanese chronically use it all the day. This is probably the aberrance of the culture.

Diet Culture difference between China and America.(中美饮食文化的差异)这篇可以参考:)~

The main difference between Chinese and America eating habits is that unlike, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food. Chinese are very proud of their culture of food and will do their best to give you a taste of many different types of cuisine. Among friends, they will just order enough for the people there. If they are taking somebody out for dinner and the relationship is polite to semi-polite, then they will usually order one more dish than the number of guests (e.g. four people, five dishes). If it is a business dinner or a very formal occasion, there is likely to be a huge amount of food that will be impossible to finish.

A typical meal starts with some cold dishes, like boiled peanuts and smashed cucumber with garlic. These are followed by the main courses, hot meat and vegetable dishes. Finally soup is brought out, which is followed by the starchy "staple" food, which is usually rice or noodles or sometimes dumplings. Many Chinese eat rice (or noodles or whatever) last, but if you like to have your rice together with other dishes, you should say so early on.

As we all know, different countries have defferent culture. “Culture is the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one category of people from another.”
It is inevitable that the cultural difference has impact on business. For example, when a company is having meeting, the word “table” they mention in American English means to put something on the agenda, but in British English it means to pu something off the agenda. This example indicated how the culture affects the business.
There are four cultural dimensions that were defined in Hofstede’s research :power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and masculinity.
The most significant influence in cultural difference is the power distance.“It would condition the extent to which employees accept that their boss has more power that have and the extent to which they accept that their boss’s opinions and decisions are right because he or she is the boss.”Among most oriental corporate cultures, there is hierachism reasons, great centralization, sometimes called ‘power-oriented culture’,due to the historical reasons. That is a high power distance culture that mangers make the decision and superious appeal to be entitled more privileges.Their decision always close supervision positively evaluated by subordinates. In this situation, it is not be regarded if subordinates have a disagreement with their managers.
