to understand the important ideas from the text, we must “summarize”. this unit ‘s reading strategy is “summarize”. do this by answering “who, what, where, why”. can you find out the four wh-s from the reading? read through the article again and make some notes.
according to your notes, write a summary of the reading using no more than 100 words. check their summaries by calling some ss to read theirs. make comments on them.
finally, read the sample summary to the class.
because china will be the host for the 2008 olympics. many chinese people are trying to improve their english . singing english songs is one way. many singers entered a contest by singing english songs and they sang just as well as native speakers. a winner said singing english songs made her more interested in learning english. so this kind of contest encourages chinese people to speak english. and it is also a good idea to have fun with english. besides singing english songs, there are many other fun ways to learn english, like watching english movies , reading english books and even make friends with a native speak of friends.
to write a summary correctly, shorten the information, give the main points-not the details. try to use different words but keep the original meaning.

have you ever tried improving your english before 2008 olympics using any of the ways mentioned in the reading? what other ways can you think of to improve your english? can you make a plan? work in groups to discuss.
