The last of these four criteria - turning a profit - can arguably conflict with at least two of the other listed qualities and objectives of good journalism. It is ncluded alongside the others due to its particular significance in the context of the contemporary existential crisis facing news organizations: anything that makes money for journalism in hard times can be viewed as a ‘useful tool’,although, as might be expected, this has to be balanced against any nega-tive outcomes - such as commodification - on journalism’s ability to critique capitalism, or at least retain a credible distance from advertising.
There are those who would argue that such a balance is always likely to be tipped heavily in favour of the profit motive at the expense of all else because newspapers in Britain are first and foremost businesses:
they do not exist to report the news, to act as watchdogs for the pub-lic [...] to defend the ordinary citizen against the abuses of power, to unearth scandals or to do any of the other fine and noble things that are sometimes claimed for the press. (Sparks 1999: 46)
