Due to efforts made in the past 40-odd
years, the living standards of the Tibetan people have improved markedly. Most
farmers and herdsmen have adequate food and clothing and some have attained
relative affluence.
In the last four decades, Tibet has
progressed by leaps and bounds in the system, structure and total volume of its
economy, ending the closed, manorial-system-based natural economy for good and
moving forward to a modern market economy.
There was no highway in Tibet in the old days, but today a
road transportation network has taken shape. Construction of the Qinghai-Tibet
Railway began in 2001; when it was completed and opened to traffic, in 2005,
the days when Tibet is not accessible by rail went beyond recall. Tibet has received
thousands and thousands of visits of tourists from both home and abroad.
Without doubt, as I stated above, those dramatic modernization
changes Tibet has experienced have brought great conveniences to Tibetans and
made their lives better off.
However, as every coin has two sides, modernization of Tibet
has brought severe problem. One of them is pollution. With highways and
railroad built, the environment in Tibet has been damaged inevitably.
Another challenge is the tradition and beliefs over there has
been slightly changes by the cultures came outside Tibet.
