How to Learn Efficiently
I've noticed that many of our members are very interested in reading other's experiences in learning English. And they often ask the same question: How did you learn English well?
I believe everyone has his/her own way to learn English and has different feeling about the learning process. So why not share it with us at here, our family.
The way I've passed for learning English was not efficient at all. I learned for three years after I graduated from shool. But that was for a diploma, a tupid diploma which cost me so much time but would not be recognized formally by any companies. I don't remember I learned anything from that period, maybe only a little grammar. That's all.
Later I got a chance to study in the advanced English courses provided by the company I worked for. Hehe… I wasn't advanced at all. I accidently gave a right reply to the only oral question the interviewer asked me (since that's the only word I understood in that long sentence from interviewer's mouth). She couldn't believe my oral English was so poor later in the class, but it's too late for her to change her mind. Haha…..
For six months, I studied full time each day and don't need to work. That's a good time to really get some feeling of learning English. Our oral class teacher is from New Zealand. I couldn't catch her a bit at first, but day by day I'm getting better. One of our main tasks during the class was to memorize as many as new words as possible. We took a three thousand vocabulary book and later the five thousand. Some classmates even took a ten thousand book which is scary to me. Hehe… I'm too lazy. But actually I tried my best at that time to learn as much as I can. But some time later I realized my brain was taken too much things that I didn't have time to use them often in order to master them. Although my listening was improved and my vocabulary was expanded, I wouldn't say that was an efficient study.
In the later years, I kept experiencing the process of English learning. And I've found that the most efficient way to learn and master the language is to put learning and practice into one process. For example, once you learn a new word, you should immediately use it into your writing and talking until you're so familiar with its usage. Then you can say you've mastered it. If you think you could memorize 100 words in one day and keep them in your mind for future use, you're totally wrong. Don't you have the time when you want to say something and you just can't remember it from so many words you've read? That's because you've never used them anymore after you read them. Another vivid example, Chinese is our mother tongue. But we still forget how to write some words which are seldom used or read. Why? That's because we don't use them often. Things will fade off if we don't touch them or feel them.
Now. Do you catch what I mean? If you do, you won't waste your time trying to learn as many as you can. Understanding and mastering everything you learn is the purpose, not the quantity of what you picked up from various English teaching books.
