Imagine a stranger approaches you one day and says: “I can make you rich if you do what I say.”

 Would you immediately follow his instructions, or start asking questions? 

Most likely, you would request some evidence from the stranger to prove his claims. 

By asking questions, you're using a skill called “critical thinking.”

Living in the information age, we receive all kind of information every day. 

Some comes from people or sources we know and trust. 

But much of it comes from less credible sources Web sites, advertisements, television. 

Critical thinking helps us determine whether this information is reliable or not.

Learning is the basis of thinking and thinking is the sublimation of learning. Confucius said: "learning without thinking is useless; thinking without learning is dangerous."

学习是思考的基础,思考是学习的升华。孔子说:“学而不思则罔;思而不学则殆。”

It means that if you study book knowledge without thinking, you will not be able to distinguish the true from the false, and you will not be able to understand and apply what you have learned; if you just study hard but don't read carefully.

意思是指,如果学习书本知识而不思考,就会不辨真伪,更不能融会贯通,学以致用;如果只是苦思冥想却不认真读书,就会孤陋寡闻,才疏学浅,更不能做到博见约取,标新立异。

These two sentences of Confucius illustrate the dialectical relationship between learning and thinking. Learning and thinking are two complementary and inseparable thinking activities in the process of acquiring knowledge.

孔子的这两句话阐明了学习与思考的辩证关系。学习与思考是人们在获取知识过程中,两个相辅相成,密不可分的思维活动。只学习不思考不行,只思考不学习也不行。只有将二者正确地结合起来,才算真正懂得了学习与思考的辩证关系。

A new era needs a new voice. Let's learn to think independently and do our bit for the progress of the times. The new era needs new people with new ideas. Let's learn to think independently and build a road to success for ourselves.

In our modern society, the concept of independent thought is fast becoming obsolete. These days, anyone unsure of what to think about a certain issue can simply go online or turn on the television and a host of bloggers, pundits, and analysts are ready and willing to tell them where they should stand on an important topic. Although the Internet has made sharing one’s opinion much easier, it is also making it increasingly difficult to think for one’s self. The old fashion way of forming an opinion, by examining the facts and shaping an opinion from them, is under fire from a news media that wants to tell us not only what is happening but how we should feel about the unfolding events. Now more than ever, the ability to think for one’s self is an important skill and realize the importance of doing so.
The ability to think for one’s self is becoming a lost art today. Too many people take the easy way out and simply allow the majority to do their thinking for them. But thinking for one’s self has little to do with always going against the majority. Whether you side with the majority or not is less important than how you decided whom to side with. As long as you arrive at the conclusion by yourself and don’t allow yourself to be influenced by others, you are making the right decision. Aristotle once said “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”

The Importance of Independent Thinking
  No one can be a great thinker who does not realize that asa thinker it is her first duty to follow her intellect to whateverconclusions it may lead. Truth gains more even by the errors ofone who with due study and preparation, thinks for himself,than by the true opinions of those who only hold them becausethey do not suffer themselves to think. No that it is solely, ofchiefly, to form great thinkers that freedom of thinking isrequired. One the contrary, it is as much or even moreindispensable to enable average human beings to attain the mental stature which they are capableof. There have been and many again be great individual thinkers in a general atmosphere of mentalslavery. But there never has been, nor ever will be, in that atmosphere an intellectually activepeople. Where any of heterodox speculation was for a time suspended, where there is a tacitconvention that principles are not to be disputed: where the discussion of the greatest questionswhich can occupy humanity is considered to be closed, we cannot hope to find that generally highscale of mental activity which has made some periods of history so remarkable. Never whencontroversy avoided the subjects which are large and important enough to kindle enthusiasm wasthe mind of a people stirred up fro9m its foundation and the impulse given which raised evenpersons of the most ordinary intellect to something of the dignity of thinking beings.
  She who knows only her own side of the case knows little of that. Her reasons may be food, andno one may have been able to refute them. But if she s equally unable to refute the reasons of theopposite side; if she does not so much as know what they are, she has no ground for preferringeither opinion. The rational position for her would be suspension of judgment, and unless shecontents herself with that, she is either led by authority, or adopts, like the generality of the worldthe side to which she feels the most inclination. Nor is it enough that she should heat thearguments of adversaries from her own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompaniedby what they offer as refutations, That is not the way to do justice to the arguments, or bringthem into real contact with her own mind. She must be able to hear them form persons whoactually believe them; who defend them in earnest, and do their very utmost for them. She mustknow them in their most plausible and persuasive form; she must feel the whole force of thedifficulty which the true view of the subject has to encounter and dispose of; else she will neverreally possess herself of the portion of truth which meets and removes that difficulty. Ninety-nine ina hundred of what are called educated persons are in this condition; even of those who can arguefluently for their opinions. Their conclusion may be true, but it might be false for anything theyknow; they have never thrown themselves into the mental position of those who think differentlyform them and considered what such persons may have to say; and consequently they do not, inany proper sense of the word, know the doctrines which they themselves profess.
