Soochow University, located in the famous historical and cultural city of Suzhou, is a national "world-class discipline construction university" jointly constructed by the Ministry of education and the people's Government of Jiangsu Province. It is one of the first batch of universities selected in the national "211 Project" and "2011 plan".

In 1950, Suzhou National Institute of social education (founded in 1941), Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Education (founded in 1928), and Chinese Academy of Arts (formerly Wuxi Sinology school, founded in 1927) merged to form the South Jiangsu Institute of culture and education.

1950年，苏州国立社会教育学院（1941年创办）、江苏省立教育学院（1928年创办）、中国文学院（原无锡国学专修学校，1927年创办）合并组建苏南文化教育学院。

In 1952, when the national colleges and departments were adjusted, the school of Arts and science of Soochow University, the school of culture and education of Southern Jiangsu University, and the Department of mathematics and physics of Jiangnan University merged to form Sunan Normal University. In December of the same year, it was renamed Jiangsu Normal University. It received the relevant files of Soochow University and ran the school at the original site of Soochow University.

1952年全国院系调整时，东吴大学之文理学院、苏南文化教育学院、江南大学之数理系合并组建苏南师范学院，同年12月更名为江苏师范学院，接收东吴大学相关档案，在原东吴大学校址办学。
