where定语从句和状语从句的区别

Where如果是定语从句，前面必定有一个名词。

如果是状语从句，前面必定有一个完整的句子。

例：Three apartment buildings have been constructed where there used to be a warehouse. （√）

大意：在以前有个仓库的地方盖了三栋公寓楼。

例：Three apartment buildings have been constructed in this area, where there used to be a warehouse. （√）

大意：这个地区建了三栋公寓楼，那里以前是一个仓库。

解析：第一句话是个状语从句，修饰前面整句话，where前面没有名词。

第二句话是个定语从句，修饰area

不难发现，不管定语从句还是状语从句，where后面的句子是独立完整的。

你可以在where前面加一个in the place (places)，这样你就大概明白其中的意思了。

譬如说，在雅思地图题里，我们有可能会写到地图的变化，就有可能用到地点状语从句。

例：A café and a supermarket have been added where there was a parking area. （√）

大意：在以前停车的地方，一个新的咖啡店和一个超市建起来了。

这句话可以近似看成下面一个定语从句

例：A café and a supermarket have been added (in the place) where there was a parking area. （√）
