Have you ever watched lightning during a storm? Have you ever wanted to know more about it? Benjamin Franklin did.
At that time, most people held the superstition that lightning was God’s angry behaviour. However, Franklin believed that lightning was just an electrical current in nature. One way to test this idea would be to see if the lightning would pass through metal. In 1752, Franklin and his son successfully conducted the famous kite experiment. A kite fitted with a metal spike was flown into the sky during a thunderstorm. The kite could conduct electricity down the kite string. A key was attached at the end of the string, in order to conduct the electricity to the ground. Suddenly the kite was struck by lightning. And when Franklin moved his hand towards the key, a spark jumped across and he felt a shock. That proved lightning was natural electricity.
However, some scientists think that Franklin did not perform this experiment in this way as it would have been fatal. Instead, perhaps, he used the kite to collect some electric charge from a storm cloud.
Anyway, from his kite experiment, Franklin understood that lightning was very powerful and dangerous. Thus he invented a great way to protect people, buildings, and ships from it — the lightning rod.
