Passage 1
Amy Diamond is angry and confused. Yesterday, her boss, Dick Laurence, the director of public relations for an Ivy League university, asked for a report on a new project; within minutes, he was criticizing her for lacking “inner strength”.
It all started when Mr. Laurence gave her one week to plan a press conference announcing the reorganization of the business school. Organizing a major press event and getting reported on national TV is a difficult task at any time, but it was nearly impossible with just a week to organize it. So when Laurence asked her how the project was going on, she answered frankly. “It’ll be a miracle if I accomplish it,” she said. What she wanted was little sympathy, perhaps even a vote of confidence. Instead, she got criticized.
“You really are unsure of yourself,” he said, adding that her lack of self-confidence was going to be a “serious problem in her career.” He said he wanted an assistant with a “can-do spirit,” someone who “sees solutions, not problems.” He practically pushed her out of his office, saying, “For your sake, I hope you do accomplish it.”
Now Amy doesn’t know what to think. How could Dick show so little faith in her? 104.In her six months working for him, Amy has managed many difficult assignments quite well.
Perhaps she shouldn’t have been so open. Although he has a wonderful sense of humor, Dick is the typical company man, never complaining and never showing any weakness. But not showing self-doubt isn’t the same as not having it. Amy’s worries don’t make her any less competent or professional. She doesn’t want to act like one of those paper-tiger guys. But is that the only way she can win back her boss’s confidence?
