Nurse managers frequently encounter conflict between employees and between themselves and employees.Unresolved conflict can lower morale and threaten quality care.Clements(2003) described five styles for dealing with conflict-------avoiding,accommodating,competing,compromising,and collaborating----and noted that that none of the five styles is bad.The problem is falling into a habitual style of conflict resolution that might not be the best for a particular situation . Effective nurses try out each style and learn to use the style best suited for each situation. Box 23-5 identifies 12 poor management practices that can lead to conflict.

Change is the process of transforming or modifying something . It might be planned,unplanned,developmental, or , as Porter-O’Grady and Malloch suggested, quantum and ever-present . Nursing and the healthcare system are continually changing and evolving , and momentum will only escalate in the years to come . Factors such as the increasing number of chronically ill and order people , the increasing role of government and industry in healthcare , the rising cost of healthcare , and the changing patterns of healthcare delivery have produced a need for innovation and change in healthcare.
