Do not use the pip from debian package repo. it's out-dated.
There are two ways to resolve this:
uninstall python-pip package and install pip from pip official website. there is a script for that.
upgrade pip using pip first. that is: sudo pip install -U pip
When you are on latest pip version, try install ipython again.
