Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British politician, best known as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. At various times a soldier, journalist, author, painter, and politician, Churchill is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in modern British and world history. He won the 1953 Nobel Prize in Literature. In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the "100 Greatest Britons", participants voted Churchill as the most important of all.
Churchill's legal surname was Spencer-Churchill (he is related to the Spencer family), but starting with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, his branch of the family used the name Churchill in public life.
