Eddie Rickenbacker never had time to finish the seventh grade.His father was killed in an accident,and Eddie had to quit school to earn a living for his family.
His first job was in a glass factory,where he worked the night shift.His second job was in a shoeshop,and his third in the machine shop of a railroad.
At the age of fourteen Eddie saw a horseless carriage for the first time.At once,cars became his main interest. He wanted work that would let him earn his living and work on cars at the same time,so het got a job in the first garage to open in town.
When the boss was out,Eddie learned to drive the cars himself.He even made in his spare time.He worked at it in his backyard,using tools he had made himself.He actually succeeded in building a motor that would run.
Then the Frayer—Miller Automobile Company opened in town.Eddie knew he just had to work for Mr.Frayer.He went to the factory every Sunday morning for eight months.Over and over he asked for a job.At last he got tired of being turned down.One Sunday he just wallked in ,picked up a broom,and began to sweep the floor.Mr.Frayer liked this kind of spirit. He hired Eddie to do odd jobs around the plant .
After that,Eddie spent most of his time learning about cars and what made them run.He soon realized that he could not go far without more school.He had to improve himsrlf.

那之后艾迪花了很多时间研究汽车和它们的动力。他很快认识到再不学习知识就不行了。他必须提高自己的专业技能。
