The Three Gorges Dam, which is the biggest project in China, started to be built in 1993 and it'll be completed in early next century.
The Three Gorges Dam is 2335 meters long and 183 meters high. It'll be the biggest dam in the world. It is built for tow reasons. One is to control the water of the Changjiang River and the other is to make electricity.

The Three Gorges Dam will do a lot of good to the people of the country. But at that time, it brings some problems. For example, because of the dam, the water level of the Three Gorge area will rise 175 meters. It'll be necessary to move over 1 million people from their homes. Many old temples will be covered by the water. And many animals and plants which live in the Three Gorges area are in danger, too. Scientists are trying their best to solve these problems.

When the dam is completed, it'll control the waters of the Changjiang River and the Changjiang River area won't be flooded any more. The people living along the Changjing River will have a safe and happy life. And the Three Gorges Dam will be one of the biggest man-made projects in the world.
