Although a player who has had to think long and hard about his career path, Gerrard remains central to the Liverpool cause.
For the second summer in a row the midfielder was forced to consider a move away from Anfield, with Chelsea and Real Madrid eager to add him to their squads, despite ultimate glory in the Champions League final.
In July 2005 his departure seemed assured after talks over a new contract broke down. Chelsea moved in with a bid of around £32million, which was rejected, and Gerrard was mocked up in a blue shirt in the tabloids.
But that very same evening, following talks between the player and chief executive Rick Parry, led to a change of mind and within days he had but pen to paper on a new four-year contract.
Gerrard insisted he never wanted to leave Anfield and only a misunderstanding with the club led to his initial decision to move on.
However, Gerrard's hunger for success remains and if Liverpool do not become competitive in the Premiership or fail to secure Champions League football the old rumours will resurface. It remains uncertain if Liverpool as a club can match Gerrard's ambitions.
Gerrard, one of the best midfield talents in England, made his Liverpool debut in a European tie during the 1998/99 season against Celta Vigo at Anfield.
He claimed a midfield spot as his own during 1999/2000, placing then-captain Jamie Redknapp's future in doubt. A very versatile player, he also filled the right-back slot on a number of occasions during the 2000/01 season.
He has limitless energy in the engine room and during the course of that season chipped in with his fair share of goals - usually blistering long-range strikes.
The only negative side of his early career was his vulnerability to injury, which prevented him making more of an impact on the international scene.
He made his England debut against Ukraine on May 31, 2000 and on the same day was named in Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 squad. He was one of the few successes of the dire campaign, when he came on as a substitute to hold the midfield against Germany.
Gerrard has become a regular for England, and scored England's second goal in the historic 5-1 demolition of Germany in September 2001.
However, he was forced to give up his place in England's squad for the 2002 World Cup in order to have surgery on a groin problem so he could be fit for the start of the 2002/03 campaign.
Gerrard, who picked up winners' medals in the UEFA Cup, Worthington Cup, FA Cup and European Super Cup in 2001, started the 2002/03 season poorly and was at one point dropped from the Liverpool starting XI.
He hit the headlines for the wrong reasons in December 2003 after launching a horrific, two-footed lunge on Everton's Gary Naysmith in the Merseyside derby. He received widespread condemnation from the media and was eventually handed a three-match ban, although he was not punished by the referee at the time.
Gerrard eventually rediscovered his form for both club and country and is a vital player for both.
The midfielder was handed the Liverpool captaincy in October 2003 following a loss of form by Sami Hyypia. It transformed the player's performances from top class to the brink of world class.
And in November he penned a new contract which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2007.
Gerrard was inspirational, tigerish in the centre park and lethal around the edge of the box.
He was a certainty for England's squad for Euro 2004 - but his disastrous backpass in the opening game against France was his seminal moment of the tournament.
With England level at 1-1 with the holders 1-0 deep in injury time, Gerrard presented the ball to Thierry Henry - who was then brought down in the box by David James. Zinedine Zidane stepped up to fire home the winner.
Gerrard never found his club form at Euro 2004 - much like many of England's stars.
On his return from Portugal, Gerrard seemed set to become Chelsea's latest big money signings. But after much thought he decided to remain at Anfield.
He said: 'For the first time in my career I thought about the possibility of moving on but after coming home from Euro 2004 and sitting down with my family and spending time with my agent I have decided I am staying on at Liverpool Football Club.'
But the decision of close friend Michael Owen to jump ship for Real Madrid a matter of weeks later must have left Gerrard questioning his decision.
After a fine start to the 2004/05 season, he was rocked by injury in mid-September. He suffered a broken metatarsal against Manchester United which would rule him out for up to two months.
On his return he was on top form. His late goal against Olympiakos in the Champions League group stage sent Liverpool through at the Greek side's expense. It was an outstanding strike and a true captain's moment.
Gerrard went on to be truly inspirational for Liverpool, but doubts about his future remained. It was always thought that if the Reds failed to qualify for the Champions League he would leave. They achieved far more than that.
Although fifth place in the Premiership normally would not earn a place among Europe's elite, Liverpool were granted special dispensation after they lifted the trophy following a dramatic victory over AC Milan in the showpiece final.
Despite that success, a breakdown in communication between club and player led to him declaring his intention to leave. But 11th-hour talks led to him signing a new deal until 2009.
Prior to the start of the 2005/06 season, Gerrard was approaching 300 appearances for the Reds.
Whether or not he remains at Liverpool still relies upon success
