Gaga is a little duck. He is small, dirty and ugly. His friends don’t like to play with him.

One day, Gaga walked behind his friends quietly(静悄悄地).But his friends did not want him. Gaga was very sad and ran to the river and cried loudly(大声地)。

Just then, a big beautiful bird heard(听见)him crying and flew down(飞下来,落下来). She said, “Please don’t cry. Tell me, what do you want? I can help you.”

Gaga told the truth(真相). The beautiful bird said, “OK, I can help you to become a good-looking duck.” Then she took out a blanket and put it on the duck’s body. She said something which the little duck didn’t understand. Then she took away the blanket. There stood (站立)a good-looking duck.

Gaga was very happy. He thanked the big bird and quickly went to play with his friends.

When Tiger jumped on Fox, Fox cried out, "How dare you attack the King of the Jungle!"

Tiger looked at him in amazement, "Nonsense! You are not King!"

"Certainly I am," replied Fox, "All the animals run from me in terror! If you want proof, come with me." Fox went into the forest with Tiger at his heels. When they came to a herd of deer, the deer saw Tiger behind Fox and ran in all directions.

They came to a group of monkeys. The monkeys saw Tiger behind Fox and they fled. Fox turned to Tiger and said, "Do you need more proof than that? See how the animals flee at the very sight me?!"

"I'm surprised, but I've seen it with my own eyes. Forgive me for attacking you, Great King." Tiger bowed low and with great ceremony he let Fox go.

The King of Benares was out on a hunting trip with his wise counselor. They stopped to feed their horses some peas. Suddenly a young monkey darted down a tree and scooped a huge handful of peas out of the feeding trough. Halfway back up the tree one pea fell from the monkey's furry hands and, in a desperate attempt to catch it, the monkey dropped all the peas he was carrying.

Peas scattered on the ground and the horses ate them. The monkey climbed back up the tree empty-handed and sat sadly on a branch. The King and his wise counselor watched this episode with amusement. The counselor chuckled, "Great King, when far too greedy you be, remember that monkey and the pea."

Anansi the Spider hated to share! When Turtle came to his house at mealtime, he said, "I can't give you food until you've washed your dusty feet!"

Turtle licked his lips when he saw the big plate of steaming food, but politely walked to the stream to wash. When he returned, the plate was empty. "Good meal," Anansi said, patting his full stomach.

"One good meal deserves another!" said Turtle. "Come to my house for dinner tomorrow." Turtle fixed a fine dinner at the bottom of the river. "Come on down and eat!" he said.

Anansi filled his jacket pockets with stones so that he would be weighted down enough to stay at the river's bottom and eat. "It's impolite to wear a jacket to dinner!" Turtle said, "Take it off!"

But when greedy Anansi took off his jacket, he floated back up to the surface of the water and hungrily watched Turtle eat his fill!

A woodman was once working on the bank of a deep river. Suddenly his axe slipped from his hand and dropped into the water.

"Oh! I have lost my axe," he cried. "What shall I do? The water is very deep and I am afraid to dive into it. What shall I do? Who can help me?"

Mercury heard the poor man's cries and appeared before him.

"What is the matter, poor woodman?" he asked. "What has happened that you are so sad and unhappy?"

Mercury listened to the man's story and then said, "Perhaps I can help you." He dived into the river and brought up a golden axe. "Is this yours?" he asked. "No, that is not mine," was the answer. Mercury dived a second time and this time brought up a silver axe. "Is this yours?" he asked. Again the answer was: "No." So Mercury dived a third time and this time brought up the very axe that the woodman had lost. "That is my axe," cried the man. "Yes, that is my own good axe. Now I can work again."

Mercury was so pleased with the fellow's honesty that he at once made him a present of the other two axes and disappeared before the fellow could even say: "Thank you."

The woodman went home very pleased with his good luck. He told his friends all about it and one of them decided to try his luck. So he went to the same place, dropped his axe into the river, and cried out: "Oh! I have lost my axe. What shall I do? Who can help me?"

Mercury appeared as before, and when he learnt that the man had lost his axe, he dived into the river. Again he brought up a golden axe. "Is this yours?'' he asked.

"Yes, it is," said the second woodman. "You are not telling me the truth," said Mercury. "You shall neither have this axe nor the one that you so foolishly dropped into the water."

A king was in the habit of writing poems which he himself thought perfect. Since he was a king, the people to whom he showed them didn't tell him the truth and praised them to the skies.

One day the king showed his poems to a learned man who found them poor. This made the king so angry that he sent the man to prison. Some time passed and he made up his mind to pardon the man.

When the man returned from prison the king invited him to dinner. Again he showed him his poems and again asked what lie thought of them.

The learned man turned to the guards who stood by and said, "Take me back to prison!"
