Last week, I experienced a funny thing. After leaving the town, a west small town of Shenzhen, I continued to driving to Guangzhou. On the way, a young man waved to me and I stopped. He wanted a lift with me. As soon as he got in car, I said good morning to him by Cantonese, and he reponsed me by the same dialect. Apart from a few words, I never know Cantonese. We talked nothing on the way. When we nearly got to Guangzhou, the young man said with a very low tone that"can you speak Mandarin?" I soon learnt that himself is a northeastern.
