Exam preliminaries
n Check exam timetable, date, time and room. Also, check for any
last-minute changes
n If you have experienced exceptional personal circumstances that
you believe will affect your exam performance, you should apply
for special consideration through your faculty office
n Deal with your stress early – we all respond to stress differently;
some may feel restlessness, sleeplessness, fatigue. A little bit of
stress is normal and allows you to perform well; if your stress
becomes severe, then you will need to seek help
n Take up yoga, relaxation, meditation, aromatherapy, sport.
n Visualise success – completing the exam and doing well. What will
that ‘look like’? What will that represent to you? Try to focus on
your vision to help you sustain your focus
n Use slow deep breathing to control your anxiety
n Practise under exam conditions and learn as much as possible
DAK PATEL reminds you that the examiners are actually on your side and they want you
to succeed – he also explains why chewing gum can suppress excess stress on exam day

Use relaxation
techniques and focus
on calming your
breathing

about the exam environment so that you can replicate these as
closely as possible when revising
n Preview the exam – know the format, types of questions and the
content. Find out about any exam hurdles. Practising as much as
possible with past papers will help you achieve this
n Also, find out what you are allowed to take into the exam room
with you, eg calculators, dictionaries, water, food.
The night before the exam
n Set priorities and decide what are the most important topics (not
necessarily the hardest)
n Concentrate on a few topics and know them well
n Don’t spend the night before exams trying to cram in more
revision
n Work, rest, and review your progress
n Prepare your exam kit and what you will need to take in with you
for the next day; don’t risk being in the exam hall wishing you had
a key tool or stationery
n Get a good night’s sleep
On exam day
n Have a healthy meal, preferably a protein one rather than
carbohydrate so you don’t get sluggish during the exam
n Take water supplies with you
n Take chewing gum and barley sugar to sustain you through the
exam. Chewing gum can also help relieve stress and nerves
n Arrive in good time
n Read through your summaries briefly, but don’t engage in
discussion about the topics with others. This can confuse you and
increase your anxiety. You are as prepared as you can be
n Use relaxation techniques and focus on calming your
breathing
During reading time
n Keep an eye on your watch
n Get an overview of the entire paper by scanning through it
n Read the instructions carefully, eg answer two questions from section A
and only four questions from section B
n Calculate the time to be spent on each question relative to the
marks, if it hasn’t been done for you already as shown below
an example.
Allocate your time wisely
n Each mark in an exam question should be allocated a maximum of
1.8 minutes; most exam papers now contain multiple-choice
questions and as a result students must be aware that they need to
cover every part of the syllabus – most multiple-choice questions will
be two-markers
n Written questions will fluctuate in marks
n Decide on the order of question response by starting on the
comfort-zone questions and the ones worth most marks first. Leave
the not-so-obvious ones till later.
n Analyse each question: what exactly is it asking? What information
is available? What does it mean in simpler terms? How does it
relate to the semester’s work? Are any of the other questions
similar? Are there clues elsewhere in the paper?
n Start answering the multiple choice questions by using your
thumbnail to etch the answers onto the paper.
During exam writing time
n Firstly, before attempting any questions, list the order of questions
that you will be doing
n Jot down notes, formulae for each question before starting.
n Follow the order you have decided on.
n Stick to the allocated time only, and then move on to the next
question according to your schedule. You can always come back
to it later (eg during tidying-up time as shown in the time
calculations example above)
n Make regular checks of time and calculations
n If you run out of time, jot down point-form responses; they may still
be worth marks
n Use all the time and never leave early
Strategies for multiple choice questions
n Analyse the question by isolating the stem, topic, category
and qualifier
n Don’t guess too soon; the best answer won’t always be the most
obvious
n Select the most correct answer
n Be wary of unqualified absolutes (eg never, always)
n Favour options containing qualifying phrases (eg may, sometimes,
can occasionally result in, etc)
n Be wary of extra-long jargon answers
n Make intelligent guesses
n Use your knowledge of common prefixes to make intelligent
guesses (eg hyper, macro, hydro, and pyre)
n Use information from other questions
Strategies for problem-solving questions
n Write down the formulae you will need
n Note what you’ve been told and what you need to work out
The meaning of examiners’ instructions
n Advise = present information, opinion or recommendations to
someone to enable that recipient to take action
n Appraise = judge the importance or value of
n Clarify = explain more clearly the meaning of
n Compare (with) = explain similarities and differences between
n Contrast = place in opposition to bring out difference(s)
n Demonstrate = show by reasoning the thrust of
n Describe = present the details and characteristics of
n Discuss = explain the opposing arguments
n Distinguish = specify the difference between
n Explain = set out in detail the meaning of
n Justify = state adequate grounds for
n List = itemise
n State = express
n Summarise = state briefly the essential points
n Tabulate = set out facts or figures in a table
