ABSTRACT
A substantial part of the cost structure for a permanent mold process foundry is tooling cost. This means that extending tool life is an important aspect of a cost reduction strategy for the PM shop. Because of the significant role tooling plays in the quality of permanent molded castings, tool life extension is an important topic for quality improvement as well. Yet while the literature available to AFS membership discusses a variety of ideas for lengthening tool life, there is almost nothing written to describe how one actually measures tool life. A characteristic of such importance to cost and quality should be very carefully measured. This article discusses the proper approach to use to measure permanent mold tool life. Practical guidance on the data gathering, calculation and evaluation of mold tooling life is provided. Examples from the author’s PM facility are provided to illustrate the terms of life measurement. Uses of the data are also explored to offer additional opportunities for cost and quality improvement.
