The most common way that we endanger other species is by destroying their natural habitats. Later marriage, together with smaller families, earlier retirement, and a longer life in a society of affluence, provides both men and women in modern societies an historically unprecedented degree of freedom to pursue personal endeavors. Yet what David Guttmann has called the "parental imperative" is also a necessary and important part of life, and during the parental years expressive freedom for adults must be curtailed in the interest of social values, especially the welfare of children.
