Assignment
All of the required and recommended readings for Unit 2 have demonstrated methods for analyzing how responses to “sport” (whether it’s the game, such as hockey, or the player, such as Wayne Gretsky) in Canadian popular culture represent “Canadianness.” Many of the meanings of “Canadian” that are produced or reflected in internal responses to sport (within Canada) and external responses to sport (directed toward other countries) are meanings that circulate not only the realm of sport but in other domains of cultural production in Canada.
In a 500-word essay (approximately two pages, double spaced), analyze an example of how “Canadian” is represented as an attribute in domains other than sport (e.g., in music, literature, television, the military, etc.). Newspapers and magazines, which are now easily accessible and broadly used online resources, contain no shortage of public talk about “Canada” and things “Canadian.” Choose a single item of reportage that can be accessed online by the instructor (provide the URL in the references for your paper) and write an analysis of how that item represents the “Canadianness” of its subject matter. Remember to acknowledge your use of any of the models for analysis of “Canadianness” from the reading list (or from independent research, should you choose to do that). 展开

下面是引用的观点:
Well, the American and Canadian cultures are rather inter-mingled. Something like 80% of all Canadians live within 100 miles of the Canada-US border, and we share a lot of the major media (movies, TV, etc), and so a lot of the obvious culture is shared.
However, if you look at a lot of the subtle differences, they are there!
Canadians on average tend to be more left-wing thinking and voting than Americans. We have a universal medicare, which to many Americans is bizarre. We embrace crown-corporations and subsidies far more than Americans do.
Canadians in general also tend to be more environmentally aware. The (in)actions of our current Conservative Government seem to go against the Canadian culture, and in fact against the censuses.
The US has been historically viewed as a "melting pot" - where new immigrants blend into the larger whole. Canada has been descriped as a mosiac - a "community of communities" and individual cultures, languages and differences are celebrated and encouraged.
There's been some amazing publications written on this very subject. One that comes to mind is Margaret Atwood's Survival.
