Passport(护照):

Quarter system:

Transfer(转科或转学):

Open admission:
开放式入学。也就是不管申请者条件如何都会给他入学许可。

Pass/fail grading system:
一种以通过/不通 过来计分的方式,有的学校全用此系统,有的则只用于某特别课程或学生。亦有以有学分/无学分来记录的。
Placement test:
安置测验;学生到校后的程度考试,如果考的好可直接上较高的课程。
Prerequisite:先修课程;要上某些课之前需先具备特定
的条件,如会计概论为高等会计的先备条件。
Part-time Employment(部分时间就业):
每周工作时间达20小时的有偿就业。持M-1签证的外国学生不得从事部分时间就业。在某种情况下,可以允许学习时间超过一年并取得优良成绩的持F-1签证的外国学生从事部分时间就业,也可允许持J-1签证的“交流学者”从事部分时间就业。
Part-time Student(只有部分时间用于学习的非正规学生):正规注册入学,但所修课程少于正规学生应修的全部课程的学生(参阅Full-time Student、“正规学生”栏目)。不允许外国留学生仅用部分时间学习,他们必须在学年的所有学期(暑期除外)念满学校规定的课时。
Passport(护照):
一种正式文件,用以证明持有该文件者的身份和国籍,由一个国家的政府有关机构(诸如:外交部)发给本国的公民。有效(而非过期)的护照允许持有该文件者出境和重新进入他(或她)拥有国籍的国家。在另一个国家签发签证的情况下,护照持有者可以在这一国家境内旅行。注意:在美国的外国留学生和交流学者所持护照必须保持至少六个月的有效期。
Practical Training(实习):
一个学生在其专业领域内从事的获得批准的全部时间的就业
(full-time employment),可以是在一个教育项目执行期间,也可以是在该项目完成之后。具有F-1非移民身份的外国学生最多可以从事12个月的实习;J-1“交流学者”最多可以从事18个月的实习,称为“学业培训”
(“academic training”)。具有M-1非移民身份的外国学生,只有在他们的教育项目完成之后才能申请实习,每在校正规学习4个月可允许其从事1个月的实习。持有F-1、J-1和M-1签证的学生都必须具备大学或交流项目主管机构的推荐书。F-1学生自愿从事实习(optional practical training)和M-1学生完成学业之后的实习(post-completion practical training)都必须得到移民归化局的批准。

Quarter system:
学季制,一学季长度约十二周,通常一学年会分为春、秋、冬三学季外加暑季。
Quiz:
课堂上的小考。往往比较恐怖,方式为老师让你上台讲演,在此同时下面的老师和学生会时常提问,甚至毫不客气地指摘你的破绽,你需要听懂他们说什么,然后小心应答而不能慌乱。这种考试不计其数,会计入你的平时成绩。

RA (Research Assistantship):
助研奖学金。 往往由系里教授选定。职责包括与教授一起做项目,撰写相公论文,制作分析程序,以及其他与研究项目有关的杂务。RA定的时间较早,
原因就是系里的教授说了算。
Resident:
在学校所在之州居住至少一年的人,他们在州立大学可付较便宜的州民学费。另外住校生亦称为resident。
Residency requirement:
大部份学校规定学生需在校内修数 个学期的课程(除独立研究和别校转来的学分外),才能毕业。另一意为要得到州民身份所需居住的年限。
Residence hall:
即宿舍。
Rolling admission:先到先审制;以循环方式,入学申请没有一定的截止日期,申请资料随时寄到就随时开始审核。
Responsible Officer(负责人):

Semester system:
学期制,一学期长度约十五到十六周, 通常一学年会分为春、秋两学期外加暑期。
Senior:
指大学四年级或中学十二年级(约高三)的学生。
Social security number:
社会安全号码,简称SSN:最初 目的是作为社会安全保险之用,但事实上不管考驾照,买保险或银行开户几乎到处都会用到,有些学校也会拿此号码作为学生证号码(student identification number),其重要性如同我们的身分证字号。外国学生到当地后可至相关机构办理。
Seminar:

TA (Teaching Assistantship):
助教。名额由系里定夺。往往教授本系本科生的一些课程。还包括实验室管理, 开课堂讨论,监考,批改作业等。大家需要注意讨论课,这种任务 占了TA工作的大部分,决不轻松!你想象一下各种口音的人来问 你问题,你不仅要准确听懂,还要马上作出反应。难度可想而知。 现在许多中国来的TA被证明为很不合格。这一矛盾日益激化,学生也反应强烈。所以越来越多的学校开始不得不将TA给了英语为母语的申请人,(PENNY STATE尤其对中国人的TA不放心)尽管他们的学术成绩不如中国人。
Test of English as a Foreign Language 或TOEFL:
也就是一般所称托福测验,为美国大学及研究所用来
评量外国学生英文能力之考试。
Thesis:
论文,一般指硕士论文。
Term:
可指学期或学季。
Transcript:
成绩单。
Transfer(转科或转学):
包括改换学业项目、学习赞助人和学习单位。学生要求开始一项全新的学业项目必须事先得到移民归化局的批准。仅仅转换学习单位而不改变学业项目则不需要申请同意。但无论出于何种考虑,任何转科或转学都应事先征得有关学习单位外国学生咨询顾问的同意,并须领取一份新的“身份合格证书”
(Certificate of Eligibility)。
Transfer student:
转学生。以大学部而言,是指已经上了一学期到三年的大学课程,而欲转往另一所大学继续就读的学生。台湾的五专、二专和三专学生便是以转学生的身份申请进入美国大学。
