i don't care about british royalty, and not because of over-familiarity. i care about british (and european) artists, philosophers, scientists. but not the bastard royals. those buffoons oppressed my ancestors since time immemorial. my family are (probably) all from the bottom of the feudal pyramid, the uneducated serfs. my job and education mean in some respects that i'm not part of that working-class background anymore; but we naturally identify with the people who spawned us. the queen's great-great-great-grandparents oppressed my great-great-great-grandparents, and i haven't seen any apology, so fuck the queen. in general, the british people who care about the royal family tend to be middle-class.
