This piece is drawn from Handel’s Six Fugues or Voluntaries for the Organ or Harpsichord, which were published in about 1735 as his Op.3 (an opus number already used in the previous year for six of his concerti grossi!).The evidence of the autograph manuscript, however, indicates that they were composed much earlier: No.6 probably dates from the period 1711-16 when Handel was beginning to establish is career in London.
This fugue is articulated into three broad paragraphs by the prominent cadences in bb.25-6 and 43-4. The first paragraph contains not only the initial exposition (five entries of the subject, bb.1-2), but the first of series of overlapping (stretto) entries, in which the subject is typically given complete in one part but reduced to its first five notes or so in another (bb.14-15,RH).Such incomplete and/or overlapping entries are diversified by key in the middle paragraph (bb.27-35); and further entries of a similar kind occur in the concluding paragraph, now back in the dominant and tonic keys (bb.44-8 and 57-9).
Within the subject, notes that move by step might be played legato, and those which move by leap might be detached; and the same rule of thumb could be applied to the free parts and episodes. Dynamics are left to the player’s discretion. The last bass note of b.25 might be played an octave lower than written – Handel was presumably writing for a keyboard with C as its lower limit. The Adagio at the final cadence may be taken to mean molto rallentando.
