问，为什么不能理解成that 引导的宾语从句，即i can't image (that)they were how excited.
how excited 作甚么语？表语么？正常语序中应该放哪里，为什么

1，用于that做连接词的即主句+that+从句
2，用特殊疑问词作为连接词的，就是本句中的how excited。
3，不加连接词，即对主语进行提问
如果用that连接的话，就变成I can't image that they were.句子则不成立了！

how是关系词，引导宾语从句。how excited不是表语，excited是形容词，how引导用来表程度。而that在此无意义，不能表达这层意思。
