A number of high volume industrial parts are comprised of circular and non-circular geometric features;such as automotive camshafts, piston heads, and Swiss-type automation machine-tool components. Traditionally, the non-circular geometric features in these parts have been manufac-tured by milling and subsequent grinding operations, resulting in high costs of tooling and long set-up times (since unique master grinders are required for each profile). With the increasing trend towards shorter product life cycles, radial contour turning (also known as the non-circular turning process — NCTP) has emerged as a successful alternative to the milling and grinding operations. In NCTP, a single point turning tool is rapidly actuated along the radial direction, synchronous with the workpiece rotation, so as to produce the desired non-circular profile
