The Classic of Poetry is the earliest collection of Chinese poetry, and to be precise, it is a collection of ancient songs. It comprises more than 300 poems, with the earliest works appearing at the early period of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Most of the authors of the poems in the Classic of Poetry are unknown. The poems in it can be classified into “Airs of the States”, “Hymns” and “Eulogies” from the perspective of music, and “straightforward narrative”, “explicit comparisons”and “implied comparisons” are three literary devices of poetry. The Classic of Poetry opens theliterature of several thousands of years in China and it is also the beginning of the literature works with the realism as the mainstream. It is the essential material to study our country’s ancient history, especially the literature history.
