Automated inventory management offers the retail industry a great opportunity for improving performance. Increased sales, faster inventory turnover, and reduced clerical costs can all be achieved by conversion from manual methods to computer-based systems of inventory management.
If a company is to realize these gains, however, it is essential that the system design be based on a careful and thorough systems analysis. A poorly designed system or a packaged system inappropriate to the particular application can quickly produce unbalanced inventories and wore rather than better performance.
In this article we will discuss the considerations that entered into the design of an automated inventory system for staples. This system was designed for a national retail chain and has been in operation for the past seven years.
