Thousands of messages have been written on the fence that surrounds the Isla Negra home of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Many of the messages praise and thank Neruda for writting beautiful poetry and
for speaking out for human rights.
Neruda didn't like it when a military government took over his country on September 11,1973. A few weeks later he died, and the new military of Chile warned people to stay away from Neruda's home. However, for seventeen years people came, secretly to write on the fence of the peot who as a child was known to say he was "hunting for peoms."
When he was ten, Neruda showed one of his peoms to his farther. The farther was suprised by the beautiful words that he asked his son who really wrote the peom. Neruda's father thought his son spent too much time writting peotry, and Pablo's schoolmates often made fun of him. But Pablo couldn't stop writting, and at thirteen, his first peoms were published. Three years later, he took the pen name Pablo Neruda. He chose Neruda after one of his favorite Czechoslovakian poets.
Today, the goverment of Chile is freely elected and is proud of Neruda's legacy. Neruda's admirers continue to visit his home to write tributes to the boy who grew up to become one of the greatest poets in the world.
