technology cooperation you need. So we have lots of work to do, no question.
Standoff between developed and developing countries:
You see this in Copenhagen, countries made commitments coming to Copenhagen, but then they did not step up to find ways or additional ideas to proposals coming to the table. And you had a very strong feeling that both sides that they won’t get enough from the other. Somehow you have to break through that and get a different dynamic going. There are a hundred reasons for China to be really pushing energy efficiency, to be really pushing the renewable sector. If China can really be driving renewable into its coal production, it will be bold shifting, it’s will be beneficial to both energy security and reducing pollution as well as reducing carbon. I think that will lay the foundation for a huge export industry. And it will be a leader in renewable technologies. And it’s already starting to happen.
And I think we need to see the same thing in the U.S., Europe, and other big players. Unless that being to happen, you can break out the stand off.
Are you optimistic on this issue?
I think we will get to an international agreement. I think we cant in a near term, or next year. To get an international agreement on important pieces of puzzle, I cannot make predictions how long that will take to get to a comprehensive agreement. But it’s really important, in the meantime, we just get going on reducing emissions, or slowing the growth of the emissions in the places that matters. The U.S. and Europe get to find a way to get on an aggressive path to reducing their own emissions. Emerging economies like China and India and Brazil are really going after their energy efficiency, reducing deforestation, driving new energy resources into their own economy, and actually seizing the opportunities to become world leaders in producing new energy technology. Frankly I think the future belongs to the countries who become leaders in that field. There will be a booming industry. There is no question about it. So I think the more the big players are moving to that direction, actually beginning to get sharp progress in reducing emissions, or slow the growth of the emission, I think that likely itself begins to build confidence make it more possible to come together in the international agreement.
