James saw an advertisement for Pet toys in a magazine offering the pet toys for amazing prices from Petz R Us. The advertisement stated that prices start from as little as $5.00. On Monday James wrote to Petz R Us and asks for the store to hold ten (10) pet toy items for a week. He encloses a $50 as payment for this purchase.

Mary is the manager of a toy store and receives the request from James in addition to the money enclosed in the envelope. (Incidentally, you should never send money through the post). Mary checks the prices of these toys and finds that they are actually listed for sale (on the shelf) at $9.00 per item. She responds to James via mail indicating that he will need to provide an additional payment to purchase the toys.

James responds to this letter and offers Mary $7.00 per toy stating that he is buying bulk and should receive a discount. Mary responds to James by mail suggesting that ‘he can have them for $8.00 per item because he is buying so many’. Before the letter arrives, James arrives to collect the items and he is charged at the checkout at $9.00 per item (less the payment made) and refuses to pay.
