For practical use, any mosquito repellent needs to maintain its bioactivity for an appropriate period of time. The
plant sample, pure or mixed oil, which was found to be the most effective in the laboratory repellent tests, was then re-
tested against A. aegypti, as before, after it had been kept in conditions that varied in temperature (−20 °C, 4 °C and
ambient temperature) and time storage (1, 2 and 3 months).
2.10. Data analysis
The median complete-protection time was used as a standard repellency measure of the plant oils against A. aegypti
in the laboratory. Differences in significance were determined by comparing the range of protection time of each plant
preparation. The effect of vanillin in prolonging the protection time of the test repellents was analyzed using theMann–
Whitney U Test.
3. Results and discussion
Table 1 summarizes ethnobotanical data, physical property and percentage yields of the plant oils extracted by steam
distillation. The highest yield was obtained from Z. limonella (5.72%, v/w), whereas that of C. zedoaria (0.54%, v/w)
was the lowest. All volatile oils obtained were less dense than water and demonstrated the differences in color and odor

The repellent activities of pure oil, with and without 10% vanillin, against A. aegypti mosquito under laboratory
conditions are given in Table 2. These pure oils possess slight repellency at varying degrees that ranged from 0-1 h of
protection. Only three pure oils, including Z. piperitum, A. graveolens and K. galanga, exerted repellent potential against
A. aegypti with median complete-protection times of 1, 0.5 and 0.25 h, respectively. The other seven oils were ineffective
as a mosquito repellent. However, the protection time of some plant oils, including Z. piperitum, Z. limonella, K. galanga
and C. zedoaria, increased significantly by incorporating 10% vanillin (Pb0.05). The highest potential was established
from Z. piperitum oil +10% vanillin, with a median complete-protection time of 2.5 h (range=1–2.5 h).

Chemical components of Z. piperitum fruit oil are shown in Table 4. Sixteen constituents representing 94.03 % of Z.
piperitum fruit oil were identified. The most abundant classes of compounds found in Z. piperitum oil were
hydrocarbons as well as alcohols. In terms of relative percentage of total plant oil area in the chromatogram, the main
component of Z. piperitum oil was limonene (37.99%), with minor amounts of sabinene (13.30%) and β- myrcene
(7.17%), constituting almost 59% of all the volatile constituents.
