Background Agricultural and environmental soil quality assessment calls for rapid, simple, inexpensive, nondestructive, yet accurate methods for determining the plant-available (PA) elements in soil. Recent advances in portable x-ray fluorescence (PXRF) spectrometry have resulted in enhanced elemental quantification, providing a potentially powerful method for rapid, on-site PA elemental determination. Methods To study the efficiency of PA elemental characterization in soil using PXRF, 650 samples collected in Louisiana were randomly divided into a modeling group (520 original samples; 517 remaining after outliers were omitted) and validation group (130 original samples; 127 remaining after outliers were omitted). Linear regression models were developed using data produced by PXRF scans and Mechlich-3 extracted/inductively coupled plasma (ICP) quantified elements (K, Ca, Cu, Zn) in both the modeling and validation datasets. Results The PXRF prediction model for PA- Ca and PA-K (macronutrients) had “good quality” while the prediction model for PA-Cu (micronutrient) had “indicator quality”, and PA-Zn (micronutrient) had “poor quality”. Soil pH had no significant impact on the content of nutrients in dry soil determined by PXRF. Summarily, PXRF showed good potential for characterizing PA Ca and K in soil, while micronutrient characterization was less robust.
