英文歌曲的歌词是值得欣赏的。大概分了好几个不同阶段，都有佳作。没有谁独尊。

20~60年代口语与书面语结合，大量漂亮的比喻和对照，大有诗经“赋比兴”的意思。请随便打开Billie Holiday和Ella Fitzgerald等人的专辑乱序播放。

60~70年代的folk song有不少纯美之作，也有描写现实的批判之声。Bob Dylan绝对是後者的代表人物。同期的流行曲绝对也是很精心雕琢的。Barbra Streisand的好友Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman夫妇写了很多经典歌曲，而且其中漂亮的句子数不胜数。她前几年出专辑专门灌录二人的词作经典，专辑名为What Matters most，其中的something new in my life写得极漂亮。

几个诗人歌手身份重叠的就更不必提了，Joni Mitchell和Cohen都是可以出诗集的人。

八九十年代有各种不同的创作组合，不少vocalists对自己歌曲的歌词是很有要求的。只是两千年开始，唱片公司开始主打唱作人，不论英文学得好不好都要歌手自己写歌词，好像作词人也就没落了。流行歌的歌词也越来越烂。只剩下过去的资深艺人还保证了以前歌词的水准。
