European cinema companies are threatening a boycott of Disney films after finding out that the new 3-D Alice in Wonderland film by Tim Burton will have a DVD release within 90 days after release in cinemas.

Exhibitors in the U.K. already threatened a boycott last week but this week The Guardian newspaper is reporting that Holland's four largest exhibitors and some Italian ones are joining the insurrection.

In the Netherlands, Miverva, Pathé, Wolff and Jogchems represent about 85 per cent of all cinemas in that country.

They are not happy with Disney's decision to do an early DVD release. Normally, a DVD isn't put out until four months after a film's first airing.

"We expected [Alice] to become one of the most popular movies of 2010," Youry Bredewold of Pathé told The Guardian.

"But we decided we need to send a message to the whole industry; If you don't accept our terms, we'll never show your movies again."

Disney officials say they're just trying to circumvent piracy. Usually, a film is done its run after six weeks to two months. There's a two-month wait for the DVD and that's when piracy usually strikes, according to Disney.

"We feel that it's important for us to maintain a healthy business on the exhibition side and a healthy business on the home video side," said Bob Chapek, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios.

The film stars Aussie newcomer Mia Wasikowska as the title character and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter but most of its cast is British including Helena Bonham Carter, Stephen Fry, Alan Rickman and Michael Sheen.

Due out on March 5, it was shot largely in Devon and Cornwall in southwest England.

The premise of the CGI-heavy film has Alice back in Wonderland 10 years later where the Mad Hatter informs a returning and older Alice that she has to help overthrow a new evil rule.
