Now, I want to consider what maybe called the first stage in an historical enquiry.Such an enquiry must begin with a situation which, in order to be picked up and taken hold of must be recognized in terms of some distinguishing marks. They may be many or few,precise or somewhat vague, but they delineate a 'something' in terms which at least distingguish a this from that. In an historical enquiry this is only a beginning which will eventually be modified in the course of the enquiry. But it is not an unimportant beginning because it indicates the continuity of change in which the situation is to be placr in order to be understood as an historical event.
