There lived a rich man named Guo in the State of Qi and a poor man named Xiang in the State of Song.
齐国有个姓“国”的富人,宋国有个姓“向”的穷人。
The poor man came to the State of Qi to visit the rich man, and asked him about the way to get rich.
穷人到齐国去拜访那位富人,向他请教致富的方法。
The rich man in the State of Qi told him: "I was also very poor before, but now I am quite well-off.
齐国富人告诉他: “我原来也很贫穷,可是现在日子过得很好。
The only reason is that I can steal and rob.
原因只是我会偷、会抢罢了。
But it is very painstaking.
不过太辛苦了。
By stealing and robbing, I could make a living in the first year, and in the second year I had more than enough to eat and wear.
我偷呀抢呀,第一年生活就够维持了,第二年就已经吃不完穿不完了。

时间一长,家里居然也富起来了。
But just when he was immensely proud of himself, the bailiffs from the yamen ***government office*** came and arrested him.
可是,正当他洋洋自得的时候,衙门差人到他家里,将他捉拿归案。
He was declared guilty and put in prison.
判了罪,坐了牢。
All the things he had stolen and robbed, together with his own old and worn-out stuff, were confiscated.
他偷来抢来的一切,连同他原有的破旧东西,全部被没收了。
As soon as the thief was released upon pletion of his prison term, he went to Guo's home in the State of Qi to blame him.
这个小偷刑满之后从监牢里一出来就跑到齐国姓“国”的家里责怪他。
The rich man asked him in haste: "How are you doing?"
富人连忙问他:“你干得怎么样了?”
The thief told him what had happened and sighed: "I am now even poorer than before."
小偷将经过诉说了一遍,唉声叹气地说: “我比以前更穷了。”
The rich man was astonished at first, then said regretfully: "How can you be in reduced circumstances?
富人先是大吃一惊,接着惋惜地说:“你怎么会弄到这个地步呢?
Alas, you pletely misunderstood what I meant by stealing and robbing."
哎呀!你把我说的偷、抢的意思完全误会了。”
He continued: "By stealing and robbing, I meant seeking for the resources of the earth, and racing against the seasons of the heavens.
又说: “我说的偷、抢是向土地要资源,与老天抢时间。
Dense forests, broad land, sunshine, rain and dew, wind and cloud, all these are my targets for robbing.
茂密的山林、广阔的土地、阳光、雨露、风云等都是我抢夺的物件。
I approach them, make friends with them, and rely on them to plant crops and build houses.
我接近它们,同它们交朋友,依靠它们,种庄稼、建房屋。
Birds in the sky, beasts on land, fish and shrimp in the river…all these don't belong to me by nature.

Once upon a time, there was a villager who lost a hatchet.
古时候,有个乡下人,丢失了一把斧头。
He suspected that his neighbour's son had stolen it.
他怀疑是邻居的儿子偷的。
Thereupon, he watched every move of the neighbour's son.
于是,他处处注意邻居儿子的一举一动。
He felt that his gait, his voice, and his facial expressions were all not the same as usual.
总觉得他走路的样子、说话的声音、面部的表情,都跟往常不一样。
It really seemed that the hatchet had been stolen by him.
斧头很像是他偷的。
After a few days, the hatchet was found.
过了几天,斧头找到了。
It turned out to be that when he went up the hill to cut firewood a few days ago, he left his hatchet there.
原来,前几天,他上山砍柴的时候,把它掉在山里了。
The following day when he met the neighbour's son again, he noticed that his gait, his voice, and his facial expressions were not like those of a hatchet-stealer at all.
第二天,他又碰见邻居的儿子,再注意看他走路的样子、说话的声音、面部的表情,却都不像是一个偷斧头的人。
:杨布打狗
Yang Zhu had a younger brother named Yang Bu.
杨朱有个弟弟叫杨布。
One day, Yang Bu went to the market in a white suit.
有一天,杨布穿了一套白颜色的衣服上街去。
On his way it suddenly rained, and he got wet all over.
路上,天忽然下雨,杨布全身淋溼了。
He took off his white suit, went to a friend's home to borrow a black suit and went home in it.
他脱下这套白色的外衣,到一个朋友家里借了一套黑颜色的衣服,穿着回家。
The minute Yang Bu approached the gate of his house, the big dog he reared couldn't recognize him as its own master.
杨布刚走到家门口,那条他养的大狗,竟一时认不出他就是自己的主人。
Taking him for a stranger, it pounced upon him at once, opening its mouth, showing its teeth, and barking furiously.
还以为是个陌生人,立即扑了上去,毗牙咧嘴,汪汪乱叫。
This made Yang Bu lose his temper.
这下子,杨布发火了。
He cursed: "You beast! Can't you even recognize me?"
大骂:“畜生!怎么连我都不认得了!”
While cursing, he picked up a wooden stick and chased the dog to beat it.
他一边骂,一边拣起一根木棍,追上去要打狗。
When Yang Zhu saw that his brother was going to beat the dog, he hurriedly came out, took hold of Yang Bu and said:
这时候,杨朱看见弟弟要打狗,急忙跑出来,拉住杨布,说:
"Alas! How can you blame the dog?
“哎呀!你怎么能怪狗呢?
Suppose our dog were a white dog when it went out, but came back black, could you recognize it as our own dog?"
假如我们这条狗出去的时候是条白狗,回来的时候变成了一条黑狗,你能认得出是自己家的狗吗。”
