The W-beam design is also flexible,but does not deflect nearly as much as the box-beam.so it is employed where space prohibits any substantial encroachment. Where impenetrability is the issue,such as in many urban facility medians, reinforced concrete is used.It is not designed to deflecd at all, Rather, it forces the vehcle into the general direction of traffic and stops it through friction.
