The use of a high-level, advanced OS (e.g. Symbian,
Microsoft, Linux) to support advanced applications and
services on smartphones and featurephones, is already an
established practice for mobile phone manufacturers. Until
recently (prior to 2005) the Symbian and Microsoft Windows
OSs have been dominant in the mobile handset market.
More recently there has been a new rival gaining ground in
the mobile handset market, namely Linux. Motorola seems
to be the leading Linux adopter with a number of mobile
handset models, mostly sold in Asian markets
(predominantly China). Consumer giants such as Panasonic
and NEC have also produced Linux-based mobile handsets
for NTT DoCoMo customers in Japan. A number of less wellknown
Chinese manufacturers have also introduced Linuxbased
products.
The CTAA research theme pursues service scenariobased
research for mobile devices covering both Symbian
and Microsoft OSs. Broadening the scope of this research
activity to investigate the potential of Linux as a mobile
handset platform presents new challenges due to the unique
nature/history of Linux. The Linux space is more fragmented
— for example, to develop Symbian applications requires
signing up to the Symbian Developer Program (a single
source) — however, there are numerous (more than 50)
Linux distributions available from commercial sources and
open source projects. Enablers for this research activity
include the availability of Linux-based mobile phone
platforms, together with development tools (crosscompilers,
etc), and suitable SDKs for application
development.
There are currently four notable industry initiatives
seeking to influence standardisation of Linux as a mobile
handset OS:
• the Consumer Electronics Linux Forum is large and
contains many companies which are consumer
electronics giants, e.g. Sony, but their interest is much
wider than the mobile phone industry,
• the Linux Phone Standards forum (LiPS) is relatively
new (autumn 2005) and is seeking to define the
architecture for middleware components within a
mobile device OS,
• the Mobile Linux Initiative (MLI) has been started by
Open Source Development Labs also in autumn 2005
— the MLI is focusing particularly on Linux kernel-level
issues which affect mobile phone performance,
• during summer 2006 a consortium of manufacturers
and two major operators announced the formation of
an independent entity to develop an open mobile
phone Linux distribution.
Clearly there is a significant risk for fragmentation (e.g.
the emergence of multiple standards) as the mobile industry
moves to standardise Linux as a mobile device platform.
There are early signs of collaboration between these multiple
initiatives which suggests optimism for a successful
rationalisation of the situation.
